“Big idea” essays; war and online journalism
Two “big idea” essays today:
- Mitchell Baker on “Browser Innovation, Gecko and the Mozilla Project,”
- and a Cluetrain-esque piece called, “World of Ends: What the Internet Is and How to Stop Mistaking It for Something Else.”
My interview with Kelly Goto is now up at Digital Web. We talked about what one of business’ favourite initialism, ROI, means to Web developers and Kelly offered some great insight.
News organizations are almost as revved up about a war as the U.S. government is. For this Gulf War, the pundits are already claiming the broadband Web will be what CNN was for the last one. Wired News (via Reuters) offers a basic overview of what online war journalism will be like, and the OJR has started a column offering in-depth pieces on the same.
For those Torontonians not looking forward to a war, keep the next couple of Saturday afternoons free.
Once again Gerry McGovern buries some good points under a hyperbole filled headline and lead. CMS is often a waste of time, expensive, and/or badly implemented — but they can be incredible powerful tools (and that is the reason why I’ve finally begun creating one to be used in a future version of this site).

The other, and most important, is it gives me an excuse to finally play around with database-development, PHP, and MySQL. Professionally, I've never really had the opportunity to do this and its always intrigued me.
And that future version...could be a long ways off. But I'll probably be soliciting better testers, so if anyone's interested just send me a note and I'll keep you in mind.
