Slate makes money; 50+ Headings; the next IE

Slate has become one of the few online publications to make money, and is the only big one to do so that’s not related to a traditional media outlet. (Yes, it is owned by Microsoft, but many print financed by deep-pocketed organizations, too).

Christopher Schmitt has finally launched a project that had been suggested a couple of times by Joe Clark. Schmitt has made available fifty designs to help people create better-designed headings. Those inspired are welcome to submit designs, as well.

Although the story is a month old, I hadn’t heard anything about the new version of Windows due late next year. What caught me eye was that a leaked beta contains a browser update — Internet Explorer 6.05. No one seems to have released info about its Web standards support, so this version is likely a placeholder offering the latest series of security fixes.

Speculation is that by release time, the new Windows will included IE 7.0, which I hope will fix some of the more annoying CSS issues (fixed positioning, adjacent sibling selectors, attribute and attribute selectors, and child selectors).
