Today’s editorial in the Aspen Daily News accurately sums up my feelings on the mass coverage of an American sexual assault trial is receiving in North America. Ever since a football star was caught in a slow-speed highway chase seven years ago, this kind of mob journalism has grown out of control.
However, by making relevancy the main criteria in the definition of news, as opposed to “new” and “interesting,” we might just bring some sanity back to this culture supersaturated with information.
In the meantime, do yourself a favour: when the media begins its wall-to-wall coverage on some event, ask yourself how it’s relevant to that what you deem important in your life.
Apparently, Salon’s CEO of seven years no longer considers that webzine relevant to his life. He announced his resignation yesterday, and “plans to advise tech startups in financing and distribution” — drawing from his “success” at Salon, I guess…
