IPO

Stock market abbreviation for an initial public offering, in which a company offers its shares to the buying public. It’s the golden egg for many small tech companies who could stand to make a lot of money for the sale of stock. Netscape Communications market debut is considered to have ignited the mid-1990s stock market boom for Internet-based companies. Google did the same in 2004.
