Netscape
First released to the public on the night of October 12, 1994, the Netscape browser was 10 times faster than the original graphic-based browser Mosaic. Netscape Communications was founded by Jim Clark and the first programmers of that Mosaic browser, notably Marc Andreessen. The company was first called Mosaic Communications, but the Greg Sands proposed Netscape was chosen because of a legal dispute with NCSA over the use of “Mosaic”. Netscape would start the dot-com rush with its astounding IPO on August 9, 1995, and for many years Netscape and Web browser were synonymous. On April 1, 1999 AOL officially took-over Netscape Communications, and on June 6, 2001, AOL announced Netscape was no longer in the browser business. The demise of Netscape was been blamed on everything from a bad business plan to Microsoft's monopolistic practices during the Browser Wars. Its browser’s soul lives on in Mozilla, however.
