PNG

The Portable Network Graphics was developed by the Web community in response to a potential legal struggle over the right to use the Unisys-developed GIF in the last days of 1994 (read the letter the fanned the flames). The PNG format offers greater control over image quality than either the GIF or JPEG, but has been slow to be adopted in general use thanks to Internet Explorer poor support. Pronounced [ping].
