We’ve done the holiday tours, and the packers are here now, boxing up the last remnants of our stuff which will follow us into Seattle a few days after we land on January 2. -

Today marks the first day of our last month in Toronto, the first day we are not working, and the night of our Toronto send-off. It also happens to be snowing in Seattle and freezing in Toronto, alas, at least the loonie’s fallen back to par with the greenback… -

The incredible Web Directions North conference is over, the skiing in Whistler (for me) is done, and now I have the next nine-hours to explore the city before returning (on a red-eye) to icy, cold Toronto. -

To make up for some overtime, I decided to take a few days off to both escape work and to continue developing the new version of this site. Late this afternoon, though, I was stunned when I heard about a co-worker’s departure. For the past four-and-half years, through boom and bust, we’d worked side-by-side — in fact, I’ve never worked with anyone else that closely for that long. This was the person who first showed me how the sites function and later became one of the few colleagues I’d share a drink with. But now, when I return to work on Monday, the chair beside me will sit empty. -

Remember “Generation X”?
I wonder what would have happened to those of us in “Generation X” had the Web not taken off? Looking back at CBC’s early coverage of us starting more than ten years ago, things did look pretty bleak. But around that time, the Web emerged. Many of us found work in the dot-com sector, and the shake-up created by the “new economy” leveled the playing field a bit. We shaped this medium, like the the baby boomers did with television, and in many ways the values of the Web are a reflection of our own ideals -

After following Joe Crawford’s (of ArtLung) first Usenet posting, I decided to see if I could dig up mine. Could never find it in Deja, but Google Groups has dug it up: “Re: What do Coffee Drinkers Want out of life?”, from November 2, 1994. -
DOM nightmares
Lately I’ve been remembering my dreams more than usual, and those who’ve seen Waking Life will understand the following a bit better. Mostly they've been lucid dreams—I know I’m dreaming even as I dream. Problem is I actually want to enjoy my dreams but my (sub?)conscious keeps pulling me out of them. -

Steel-toed shoes
Ended up catching a cab to work because if I didn't I would've been an hour late (ended up being 20 minutes late). So, $17.75 (plus tip) later, I arrive at work just to catch the glimpse of a co-worker disappearing in the distance to buy the company-paid-for, steel-toe shoes. -
The roll of On the Road
On the way to a friend’s wedding Saturday, my own best man began talking about how Jack Kerouac’s On the Road was written on one, big, long scroll of paper. -
Always online
Starting to understand why this whole “always connected” thing isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. I mean, sitting in front of a computer for 11-12 hours straight really begins to wear on one’s eyes, wrists, back, and mind after a few weeks. Haven’t even done any Christmas shopping yet—which probably remains my one chance to get out and walk given I’ve missed most of the e-tailers delivery deadlines. Oh well, and least I’ve got some Shoutcasted music to keep me vaguely conscious.
