Previous Incarnations: HTML5

From late 2012 to May 1, 2016

A minimal text-first design showing text set against an offwhite background

This was an attempt to simplify focus on writing by replacing the design which first appeared in the fall of 2007.

HTML5, like its name implies, was also a return to the art of coding, with the design and structure intended to leverage the latest HTML5 and CSS3 techniques circa 2010, including responsive design. One a number of levels, it failed — the design didn’t work well on mobile (phone or tablet) and it didn’t spark the creation of new content on the site.

By 2011 it was clear most content was being generated on social media networks like Twitter and Tumblr, so the home page was replaced with an archaic JavaScript call to render the contents of the latest Tumblr posts. The rest of the site sat relatively unchanged, although there were some minor design adjustments made in later 2014 when the site was paused.

The site was preserved as static files created for the end-of-life for the custom CMS built in 2007. This version of the site has become the final archive for saila.com as it was.
